Today’s circular ten mile walk started from the car park in Blackheath, took the thirteen of us to Wonersh for lunch and ended back in Blackheath via Chinthurst Hill. We encountered several stiles on the route. Some struggled to get over them.
A few years ago I worked out the best way to climb over stiles when one’s legs and balance aren’t what they used to be. No one today used my method. The key feature is to approach the stile sideways and to step over it sideways by lifting the leg nearest it upwards towards the chest (by flexing the hip and the knee) as this gives greater clearance compared with moving the leg backwards. Also one’s foot does not get in the way; it points upwards instead of downwards.
