There were twelve on the walk today. Earlier in the week heavy rain was forecast for today but fortunately for us it fell last night (0.5″). The only muddy footpath was the one in Grayswood near the pub where, it seems, a small stream runs down it.
In one field we encountered horseflies. One landed on my left hand; I reacted quicker than it and squashed it before it could bite. Another in the group was not so lucky. She dabbed nail polish remover on the bite on her leg having discovered by accident, she said, that this lessened the subsequent reaction.
