Walking Matters

Godalming & Haslemere Ramblers

A disappointing day

Set off for a walk by the seaside today on the Solent Way instead of the group’s morning one from Frensham Pond. I travelled by train but got no further than Basingstoke because a fatality on the railway line had closed the section between Basingstoke and Winchester. After waiting more than an hour on the platform in the hope of the resumption of service, I decided to return home. Even if I reached my destination (Lymington) I’d have no time for the walk.

Trains that arrived at the station from the east then became the return ones. I caught the next train back. Others were not so fortunate; their journeys were important. Some had flights or ferries to catch.

On Network Rail’s website is a page with a long list of causes of delays. Fatalities is one of them. I never realised the extent of their effect on the rail service.
