The Festival of Winter Walks, started by the Ramblers in 1988 to encourage the public to venture into the countryside, runs annually for two weeks over the Christmas period. Ours runs from Boxing Day to January 2. The Ramblers’ website says the walks showcase Britain at its wintry best. Our last one was notable more for water than winter.
This year the weather was much better. The total attendance over the eight walks was 159. Last year it was 116 for seven walks; one was cancelled because the route was flooded. In 2013 the total attendance for the walks was 161.
Our normal programme of walks resumes tomorrow. The one walk in the current programme in London is on Saturday February 7. There is major engineering work scheduled for all weekends on the rail network in the Wimbledon area until the middle of February. Fortunately there is none scheduled for February 7.
