Panorama of the Downs

Today’s 10½ mile walk was number 22 in our book Another 25 Favourite Walks. Thirteen arrived at the start on the top of Kithurst Hill. The car park is at the end of a narrow single-track lane off the B2139. There were no oncoming vehicles to contend with but there were other obstacles to negotiate— groups of young pheasants that milled around in the lane seemingly at a loss to know what to do when cars approached.

The weather was good and the views were great. To the south was the sea, to the south-west was the Isle of Wight and to the north was the valley of the River Arun. Gliders flew overhead as we marched west along the South Downs Way towards Amberley. We passed Amberley station, branched off to North Stoke and reached Burpham for lunch. After this we headed NE and, at Lee Farm, branched north to join the SDW and turned west to return to the car park.
