 Coffee stop

A break for coffee

Thirty-two arrived for this morning’s 5½ mile walk. (The sunshine and the extra hour in bed might have played a part.) This surprised the leader slightly but she coped with the large number, and the two packets of biscuits she’d brought with her to offer round at the coffee break were enough for all who wanted one. Next week’s leaders wondered if people would expect them to supply refreshments on their walk.

We met in Shamley Green and headed east on Woodhill Lane before turning left on a footpath that went up Reelhall Hill to a bridleway where we turned right. This took us along a ridge from where there were views of the South and North Downs. We crossed Farley Heath Road, passed Mayor House Farm and turned right on a footpath that went uphill across a field. At the top we stopped for coffee, ate the biscuits and admired the view.

Suitably refreshed we set off downhill, crossed a byway and walked through Winterfold Heath to join the Greensand Way near a car park. We turned right (west) on this and followed it back to Shamley Green. The mud the leader had expected near Franklin’s Farm had yet to develop.
