Witley circular

Fourteen arrived for today’s nine mile walk. It was a grey damp day; earlier drizzle had ceased. Fog descended on to the tops of hills about midday and obscured the views but this was preferable to rain. Mud was manageable and there were only four stiles.

We set off from Witley station car park, walked to the A283, crossed this, took a footpath parallel to the railway line and continued to Sweetwater Pond. Here we turned right on the minor road, branched off right on a footpath to Buss’s Common, turned left and headed for Old Enton and then Great Enton. Reaching the A283 in Witley we turned left then turned right on Church Lane. We continued up the hill, turned right on the bridleway to Banacle Common, joined the Greensand Way and stayed on it to Cosford House. Here we turned left on a footpath to Emley Farm, turned east to Rutton Hill Road, turned left along the road, branched left on a bridleway to Bowlhead Green where we stopped for lunch. There was a comfortable shelter with a seat long enough for all of us.

After lunch we walked along Screw Corner Road, turned right on a footpath that led across fields to Brook, turned left, crossed the A286, walked past the cricket pavilion, turned left on a minor road, turned right at the next footpath, turned left at the road and walked along the road to join the GSW. This took us back to the station.
