The Atlantic Wall

The Atlantic Wall, Hankley Common

There was a minute’s sunshine in the morning on today’s eight mile walk. However, there was no rain and the day was remarkably mild so we were fortunate.

Twenty-seven arrived at the start in the car park just south of Tilford. We headed SW on a byway that passed by the edge of Tilford Common. Near Chuter’s Firs we turned left on a bridleway, reached a road and turned left, crossed over the road to Tilford and entered Hankley Common. We headed east across the common on a bridleway, paused to look at the Atlantic Wall, joined the Greensand Way and followed this to Thursley Common. After continuing east on a bridleway across this common we turned north and reached Guinea Common where we turned left on a road that took us into Elstead, our stop for lunch.

Some ate picnics, some ate large meals in a pub, some ate smaller meals in a café.

After lunch we walked past the church on a minor road, passed Westbrook Farm, joined a bridleway, continued on it to Stock Bridge and then took the byway that led to the car park. At the end of the walk the leader invited us back to his house for festive refreshments. We were not short of calories today.
