Farewell to a fellow rambler

Many of us turned up yesterday for a different event—the funeral of a long-standing member of the G & H Rs. Long-serving could be another description for he was a keen member of the footpath working party until advancing years prevented his participation.

His wood-working skills were legendary. Every stile had to be erected accurately and finished carefully with sufficient sanding to remove splinters that might catch passing hands. Now the trend is to replace broken wooden stiles with metal kissing gates. They last longer.
