St Swithun’s Way: Chawton to Bentley

This was our third section of SSW—the eight mile stretch between Chawton and Bentley. Ten went by car to Bentley and took the number 65 bus to Alton where they were joined by another from the group. All travelled on the number 64 bus to the west of Chawton near the A31, walked to Chawton and set off back to Alton along SSW. The 65 bus was delayed, much to the concern of the leader, and arrived in Alton only a few minutes before the 64.

The morning started cold but by the time we reached Alton again the sun had come out and we were warm enough not to need our jackets. On the route we passed three churches (in Holybourne, Upper Froyle and Bentley) and stopped to look inside all of them. As we crossed one field a red kite wheeled round overhead.
