Godalming & Haslemere Ramblers

Haslemere, Blackdown, Gibbet Hill

The leader of today’s ten mile walk changed the route to avoid the mud bath that was likely on footpaths near Fernhurst. He took us up Blackdown via the Sussex Border Path and the Serpent Trail to The Temple of the Winds, as he’d intended, but then doubled back to Haslemere where we stopped for lunch. The route of the afternoon part of the walk went along the Greensand Way, past the Royal School and along a byway to Gibbet Hill. From here we walked through Invall, took a footpath that reached Bunch Lane, rejoined the GSW and headed back to Haslemere.

Twenty arrived for the start in the recreation ground off Scotland Lane. It was cold and damp; low cloud reduced visibility. After The Temple of the Winds we passed near the recreation ground on our way to Haslemere for lunch. Nine people took the opportunity to jump ship and left the group. The rest continued to the town where three more departed. One person decided that she’d leave after lunch. By the time the eight had eaten lunch, heavy rain had started. This was enough to deter three more. That left four on the afternoon’s walk.
