Shamley Green

We are having a run of losing people. The back marker was left behind on this morning’s five mile walk. The leader stopped by a road at the bottom of a narrow footpath through a wood to wait till he could see the end of the line of (21) walkers. We all looked round expecting the back marker to appear. He didn’t. One person went back uphill in search of him. He reappeared a few minutes later on his own. Just as some began to see if they had the back marker’s mobile phone number, he appeared in front of us walking up the road towards us. It turned out that he’d left his stick behind when we set off after our coffee break and, having told the person in front of him what he was going to do, had nipped back for it. When he returned to the place where he’d left the group, no one was in sight. Fortunately, he had a vague idea of the area and, more by luck than judgement, was able to rejoin the group.
