Today’s event was our annual walk with the London Blind Rambling Club. The organisation was good, the route was good, the weather was good, the tea was good and the company was good. We had a great time.
Twenty-nine of us arrived to escort fourteen from the LBRC across heaths, through woodland, over fields and along country lanes. Cars were less of a hazard than cyclists. Fortunately, there were fewer than usual. The leader, the middle marker and the back marker wore hi-vis vests to help alert other road users to our presence. We rarely wear these and, on reflection given their low price (about £3.00) I think we should use them routinely on walks.
The LBRC with four sighted helpers and three guide dogs travelled to Guildford by train where members of the G&HR met them and drove them to the start at Blackheath. The long line of walkers headed east via Brook to Shere where we stopped for lunch. We returned to Blackheath via Albury to complete the six mile route. Back in the village another five members of the G&HR had more refreshments waiting for us—pots of tea and plates of cakes. The malteser tiffin proved popular.
