There were 36 on the walk this morning—a record for our Festival of Winter Walks so far. The leader kept us in order; no one strayed. Mind you, there was little opportunity to do so. The route was along the towing path so there were brambles on one side and water on the other.

We met by the Manor Inn on the A3100 and headed north by the side of the canal to St Catherine’s Lock where we stopped in sunshine for coffee. Last night’s frost left mud frozen hard and patches of ice on the canal.

After coffee we retraced our steps to the pillbox by the railway bridge. Here we turned right on a path past the pillbox. This joined another one that took us onto the towing path further south near Broadford. We followed this back to the Manor Inn where thirteen stayed for more refreshment.
